email to our API developers

“The Moby team is growing.

Three gifted developers are now working full time on delivering the best possible platform and API and three part time developers are working on our own native applications.
Over 500 third party developers are using our APIs to make their application social by adding the Moby sharing features or using the search and other display methods to enrich websites and applications with relevant real-time content from around the world.

Yesterday we were surprised and proud that ProgrammableWeb wrote about you and us.
They were right that a really big part of our success is the fact that you use our APIs.

Searching geo stuff on Moby

Today we launch our new search backend. This makes searching stuff a lot quicker, but more important, we add the location ingredient in the mix!

I’m not gonna go into the technical details, but what you can do right now is search for stuff around a certain perimeter.
This means you can find all postings containing ‘rainbow’ in for instance ‘The Netherlands’ or around a geolocation.

500+ developers using the Mobypicture APIs

2007 07 30 api 500+ developers using the Mobypicture APIs

credits: Rob Cottingham

I love APIs! It is like playing with Lego.

That’s why I’m also really proud that last friday, we celebrated the 500th API developer on Mobypicture.

The developers who use our APIs benefit from our distribution possibilities.
Instead of implementing the APIs of all the social sites, like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr etc., developers can simply implement our API and make their app social.

We see our API as the central element in Moby. We want to facilitate our users in sharing their adventures and we want to makei t as simple as possible. The API helps substantially because developers can embed the Moby sharing possibilities in convenient great apps.

Last week we also posted about the Mobypicture implementation in Tweetdeck and a small walkthrough.

What can you do with our API?

  • postMedia For distributing media through Mobypicture
  • postMediaUrl For distributing media and getting the Mobypicture tinyurl of the post
  • getThumb For embedding thumbnails in your HTML
  • getThumbUrl For fetching the thumbnail URL of a Mobypicture tinyurl
  • getMediaInfo For requesting information about a posting
  • checkCredentials For checking if specified credentials are valid.
  • postComment Adds a comment to a posting.
  • getComments Retrieves all comments for a posting.
  • searchPosts Searches for postings.
  • createUser Creates a Mobypicture user
  • getUser Get a Mobypicture user’s details
  • getFriends Get the Mobypicture user’s friends
  • addFriend Add a friend to a Mobypicture user
  • oEmbed oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites.

I will soon blog about the new Moby API (don’t worry the old one will be backwards compatible) and a really interesting addition to it, which will take the sharing possibilities to an entire new level. Coming up!

Tweetdeck integration

Screen shot 2010 03 01 at 2.57.27 PM Tweetdeck integration

As of yesterday Moby has been implemented in the popular and superb Twitter desktop app Tweetdeck (version 0.33).
Iain Dodsworth sent me an email about it and made me happy!

For now it is only the integration of posting photos and showing them inline in Tweetdeck. Hopefully posting video and audio is added soon. The implementation will also be added to the iPhone and other Apps by Tweetdeck in the near future.

Tweetdeck could further use the Moby API to retrieve the amount of views and geolocation of the post in future releases.

How can you use it?
1. First install Tweetdeck (if you’re ot using it already)
2. Click settings:

#nowplaying – youtube integration

Over the last few weeks I saw #nowplaying as a trending topic on Twitter all the time.
On Mobypicture we also saw a lot of postings with the same hashtag. I started to investigate this and found out that some iPhone clients can post the song cover art of the song which is actually playing to a tweet.
This is fun, but of course when you’re sharing what you’re listening to, you want to share the song itself. So why not mashup #nowplaying with the actual songs?

Today we’ve added this mashup service to Moby.

Afbeelding 22 #nowplaying youtube integration

It works with Twittelator for now, but we’ll add this for other clients as well.

Afbeelding 21 #nowplaying youtube integration

How can you use it?

Start a song in iPod.

Quit
Launch Twittelator:

tap compose

cpmpose #nowplaying youtube integration

tap Media button

mediabutton #nowplaying youtube integration

tap “Playing Song Info”

songinfo #nowplaying youtube integration

Note that the Media Button now has the Album art!!

newtweet8 #nowplaying youtube integration

Are you a developer?

If you post stuff with the same annotation as Twittelator does also your postings are processed:

♬ ‘Right As Rain’ – Adele ♪

(so use the same symbols, then first the song title between quotes and the the artis after the dash)

How to embed the MobyMap on your Blog

Aaron Bradford is traveling the world and uses the MobyMap on his blog to let people know where he is.
The MobyMap shows all your geotagged postings on the map. It centers the map right to your latest posting.

He wrote a nice small how-to on twitip.com about how you can simply add the MobyMap on your blog as well.

A small excerpt you can read below. Read the rest on Twitip.

excerpt:

“Here’s How to do it:

  1. Sign up for free account at www.Mobypicture.com.
  2. Connect it with your social network services. i.e. Twitter and Facebook.
  3. Download the mobile app or set your favourite (Mobypicture has it’s own apps but I use Twibble).
  4. Upload some Geo-tagged pictures from a phone or computer and it will put them in your stream, post them on your MobyMap (if you click on your Username on the right sidebar you will see a link that says “Launch MobyMap”) and update your selected social networks.
  5. FinallyPaste this code where you want the map to appear on a page on your blog or website: <iframe width=”920″ height=”600″ frameborder=”no ” scrolling=”no” marginheight=”0″ marginwidth=”0″ src=”http://www.mobypicture.com/user/YOUR USERNAME HERE/map”</iframe> There are a few options in that code too so you can customise it as much as you like i.e. size and border.”

Check Aaron his MobyMap, you’ll find some real treasures!

Moby Android App goes China

Xue Kai from NetDragon Websoft Inc. contacted me a few weeks ago.

His company is one of the leading online game developers and operators in China. Besides the online game business, they have been extending their business into wireless enterprise and smart phones. This is the main website of the company: http://www.nd.com.cn, and the English website: http://ir.netdragon.us.

He offered me to translate the Moby Android App to Chinese. They really like the Moby Android App, but think that a lot of Chinese, and there are a lot of Chinese, don’t speak English and therefor can’t use it. We changed a couple of things in our configuration files to support multi languages and after a few mail like this one….

Screen shot 2009-12-02 at 4.11.50 PM

We now have a Chinese version of our Android App and we translated it to Dutch ourselves as well while we were at it.

NetDragon is promoting it on their website…. *I think :) *

Foursquare implementation #4s

Sorry, content has become Queen.

I have stressed this in some Dutch interviews over the last days, but the opening of the doors of content has started and can’t be stopped.

2010 is about context. Everybody needs to open up their silos. We’re working really hard on an even more open Mobypicture. In the beginning of next year, we’ll release a version of Moby using as many of the open standards as possible. Think of OpenSocial, oEmbed, Activitystrea.ms, Creative Commons, oAuth, OpenID etc.

This will help add rich context to your digital footprints. Think about geolocation and spots, friends lists and circles of trust accross different networks, better semantic relations between what you’ve shown interest in and what you are looking for.

We love Open API’s and just implemented a new one:

foursquare logo Foursquare implementation #4s

Today launch our Foursquare integration. We love Foursquare for its playfulness and the serendipitousness.
With Foursquare you can let your friends know where you are in a fun and simple way. If you go to a bar or restaurant you can fire up the foursquare app for iPhone or Android (and a Blackberry beta) or go to their mobile site. Here you checkin to the place you’re at. Foursquare then will let your friends know where you are, so they can join you. You can leave virtual tips at these venues for friends and you can become the Mayor of a place (the Mayor is the guy or girl who checked in to that venue the most frequent in the last two months). Plus you get points for your checkins and you can earn badges for multiple sometimes ‘mysterious’ tasks. (like being checked in to a venue with three people from the opposite sex earns you the Player badge).

How Foursquare describes it themselves:

It’s foursquare! Think: 50% friend-finder, 30% social cityguide, 20% nightlife game.  We wanted to build something that not only helps you keep up with your friends, but exposes you to new things in and challenges you to explore cities in different ways.  There’s a lot of experimenting here, so bear with us as we try to figure it all out (and thanks!)

But now the most important part:

We’ve made it even more simple and fun! With the integration you can checkin to a place using a content posting!

How do you checkin with a Moby posting work?
1. First link your account using oAuth on the services page on Mobypicture.

Afbeelding 50

2. Then make a posting using Moby like you normally do, but make sure your geo location is turned ON!

now add:

#4s and #[venuename] to your posting (in either the title or description)

For example:

Afbeelding 51

http://www.mobypicture.com/user/mathys/view/5701641

Why did we add this integration? Back to the context!

By assisting you to checkin at Foursquare we learn a little bit extra about your adventure. When you are inside the geolocation features don’t work in the best possible way. By using your Foursquare location we can pinpoint the postings you make very precise to the venue you’re at. Thus we’re helping you to share your adventure even better.

Screen shot 2009-12-01 at 12.00.50 PM

Next:

We’ll also soon add the venues to the Moby group stream and the groups to our API, so our third party developer (over 400 today) can use the group/venue data to include other ways of geolocating content. (this is very usefull for postings taken inside buildings)

Foursquare is working on showing the posted Moby media in the timeline and their apps (this is coming soon)

Spots from other social networks

So what about other social networks with spots? Actually we will start implementing more spot/venue related sites from now on. (think: Hyves spots, Spot2.be, Brightkite, etc.) Based on the services you’ve setup on Mobypicture, we’ll present you the spots of these particular sites.

So try it now!

If you’re not on Foursquare yet, get account here.

When you’re already on Foursquare, please setup your Foursquare service and try it out!
